Bahrain's Batelco sells India S Tel stake following telecom scandal
Thu, 09 Feb 2012 11:25:15 +0400
Batelco has said it is selling its 43% stake in Indian affiliate S Tel for $175m, the first exit by a foreign operator since an Indian court cancelled 122 telecoms licences last week amid a corruption probe, Reuters has reported. Batelco will sell the stake to India partner Sky City Foundation, receiving the price paid to acquire its S Tel holding in 2009, with transaction set for completion in the fourth quarter, Batelco said. "This (the sale) is a part of an earlier understanding with its Indian partner to exit, given the circumstances surrounding the 2G probe in India over the past 12 months," Batelco said, adding the deal had been in the works since late 2011. Saudi commission plan use of ID number for prepaid SIM cards
Thu, 09 Feb 2012 11:24:40 +0400
The Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) is forging ahead with its earlier decision, requiring the user's ID number, together with a prepaid card number, to use a prepaid cell phone SIM card, Arab News has reported. The move aims to end the practice of "misusing SIM cards by anonymous persons, including criminals," said the kingdom's telecom regulator. "We are still resolved to implement the decision. Telecommunications companies operating in the kingdom had asked for a time period to make the necessary changes in their system to support the regulation," said CITC governor, Abdullah Al-Darrab. The job cuts would take place in phases through this year, the Finnish phone maker said. Nokia has been reviewing the operations since unveiling the closure of its Romania plant last September. "This was inevitable. It was a surprise it took so long for the decision to be made," said Steve Brazier, chief executive of technology research firm Canalys. [AMEInfo.com]

Halliburton switching to iPhone from BlackBerry
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 10:41:33 +0400
The world's second-largest oilfield services provider, Halliburton Co is planning to replace company-issued BlackBerrys with Apple Inc. iPhones to help employees do their jobs more effectively in the field, Bloomberg has reported. The company will phase out 4,500 BlackBerrys, made by Research In Motion, over the coming two years, said Tara Mullee Agard, a spokeswoman for the Houston-based company. It's switching because the iPhone does a better job of supporting company applications like Insite Anywhere, which displays information on well construction and completion, she said. RIM's share of the global smartphone market slid to 8.2% in the fourth quarter from 14% a year earlier, while Apple's share rose to 24% from 16% in the same period, according to research firm IDC.
