Cool Cat Photo of the Week: Kitty Pretzel
Wed, 08 Feb 2012 02:10:00 +0200
Photo Credit: © Guest, Syed M. Jala
Nothing is so sweet as a cat asleep, and nothing quite as funny as a kitty pretzel in a sink. Kitty, pictured here, is a Persian-American Curl mix, bought from a breeder. Syed wrote that Kitty's favorite spot to sleep when her tummy is full is in the washroom sink. See Kitty's full story and full-sized photo in the Funniest Cat Pictures Show and Tell.

There are healthy doses of advice in-between about spaying and neutering, as cats don't practice birth control voluntarily. Some of the content featured includes:

Signs Your Cat is Pregnant
Potential Problems in Cats' Pregnancy
Learn more about the sex life of cats, and if you haven't already, I urge you to have your own cats spayed and/or neutered. Since February is Spay and Neuter Month, there's no better time than now.

Cat Breed of the Week: Egyptian Mau
Tue, 07 Feb 2012 22:08:00 +0200
Although there are other spotted breeds of cats, such as the Bengal, the Egyptian Mau, is the only breed with naturally occurring spots. The Egyptian Mau is thought to be descended from the African Wild Cat, and not coincidentally, Mau literally means "cat" in Egyptian. This striking cat fully lives up to these honors, and then some. Cat Picture of the Week: Sunshine
Mon, 06 Feb 2012 22:20:00 +0200
When I first saw Sunshine's picture in the Life With a White Cat Show and Tell, I was mesmerized by her deep golden eyes in that pristine crystal white setting. Then I read her story and I was touched to the core. Sunshine's story is one of a dual rescue, according to Chris, her parent. Chris rescued her from certain death as a very young kitten, and for 12 years, Sunshine has been Chris's lifeline. Be sure to read Sunshine's Cat Picture of the Week page, to see her full-size photo and to learn how to submit your own white cat's photos and story.

February is Responsible Pet Owner Month
Mon, 06 Feb 2012 21:50:00 +0200
For many years, February has been Spay and Neuter Month, culminating in Spay Day U.S.A.
Our responsibilities toward our cats don't end there, though. We also need to feed them nutritious meals, keep them safe from harm, and provide veterinary care. Thus, Responsible Pet Owner Month has evolved. It's been difficult trying to find which (if any) non-profit organization sponsors Responsible Pet Owner Month. The vast majority of media plugs seem to come from PR agencies for companies selling products.
I'll take it any way I can get it, though, if it will help more cat owners to develop habits of responsibility toward the cats we love. Somehow, we need to eradicate the "disposable cat syndrome." This little guy pictured here might have a home if someone had been more responsible by spaying and neutering.

Lebanon Group Making Great Strides With Animal Welfare Law
Sat, 04 Feb 2012 16:05:00 +0200
Because I revere all the cats and other animals of the world I subscribe to the Animals (of) Lebanon Newsletter. Yesterday, it featured an update on that organization's attempts to have enacted an animal welfare law. Petitions are being signed, and other groups such as university students are helping to carry the banner of the campaign.Animals Lebanon already promotes both Spay and Neuter and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), and provides veterinary vouchers for individuals to use in their own TNR efforts. The organization also has an active rescue program, with foster homes, and many cats and dogs for adoption. All the animals of Lebanon have much to be grateful for because of Animals Lebanon. This group sets a high standard for animal advocacy that is worthy of emulation. February is Pet Dental Health Month
Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:27:00 +0200
While February is officially Pet Dental Health Month, the effects of gingivitis and periodontal disease in cats can be so far-reaching that, actually, every month should be dental health month. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by the age of three years.A good Dental Care Plan, including annual veterinary examination, will add many years to your cat's teeth, and perhaps even ameliorate the risk of damage to other organs. It was a LOL, splatter the Coke on the monitor moment when I first saw this picture. Toby is SO Busted! Toby was a six month old emaciated stray when he was rescued, and now is the wild child in a multicat household. Can you guess what naughtiness he's been up to? Cat Breed of the Week: Domestic Cats
Tue, 31 Jan 2012 15:47:00 +0200
Domestic cats have always been my favorite breed, and all but one of the scores of cats who have been family members over the past five decades have been domestic cats (whether you call them alley cats, house cats, mixed breed, or moggies). Billy, pictured here, is the youngest of my boys at almost nine, but in his mind, he is the king of the castle. "Humble" is not a word in Billy's catabulary. Is he spoiled? You bet. Does he appreciate it? I suspect he considers it his just due, and I wholeheartedly agree. I believe that all cats deserve to be spoiled, whether they be the finest champion Persians to the scrawniest alley cat.The vast majority of my readers seem to share my love for domestic cats, judging by my emails and to various opportunities for photo Show and Tell on my site. We're in good company, folks. Additional Reading:
